MIDSTATE SPEEDWAY

Morris, NY

Midstate Club

I didn't even know of the existence of this track before I started this history work and got to communicate with Otto Graham. I am tremendously impressed
with the devotion and esteem with which its former participants hold the place. The Midstate history club is very active, and it is obvious how much they loved the track and how much they miss it. This is just a poor attempt at giving the track its due and maybe pointing it out to a few more people.
The old location was a fairgrounds, and - like Fonda - had great old covered grandstands that are prominent in many of the photographs. Morris drivers, while not very often being major players, did often populate Fonda Speedway fields in the late 1950's and into the 1960's. Names like Otto Graham, Harold "Bugs Bunny" Betts, Bobby Adams, DIck Schoonover, and many others are included in this list. Schoonover may have arguably been the most impactful.
I don't know much about Midstate, so my choices of whom to emphasize are based more on whom I havew heard of more than the knowledge many of the Midstate club people have. Bear with me.

This infield shot gives a good idea of the classic old grandstands at Midstate.

Midstate Speedway's use of the fairgrounds allowed for the old judges' stand to be considerably upgraded, much like Fonda.

Some of the fans preferred not to take cover in the upper stands.

Courtesy of Denny Moore
Apparently, Midstate Speedway used the old promotional ploy of lining up races on the track, in front of the crowd,
to avoid long pauses in the action.

This is the 1962 Fonda Speedway program roster. Midstaters like Otto Graham, Bob Adams, Donny Wayman, Maynard Smith, Jerry Townley, and Art Gell are
represented. You can see why I used to think I could find Otto back home in Vermont.
