EARLY RACING

It appears that the first racing in what one would call the stock car racing era took place just before World War II, with crude roadster - like jalopies called
"muddy buggies". There were no safety features and the cars raced only on dirt. Some of that early racing did occur in Dover [whether the formal race facility was
there or not is not clear]. This is where famed racing promoter Charlie Elliott got his start, racing one of those beasts. It would not surprise me if fellow
promoter Oscar Ridlon might not have tried them, as well. Early racing was also done in nearby Newmarket, NH.

EARLIER POST - MUD BUGGY RACING

I spent decades blissfully unaware of Dover Speedway. I was probably too far south in Vermont to hear much about it. The track seemed to share entrants from not only nearby regions of Maine, but also sme of that bunch that ran Massachusetts tracks. Of course, there were the locals, too.

THE SUPERS

Although I have tended to link those unique New England supermods with such as Hudson, Arundel, The PIne, and such - it looks like Dover Speedway was also a venue where these homebuilt rockets races. So I'm giving them their own section.
